Don't be that GIRL !!!

She wanted to smile,
Put on a big grin on her face,
Wanted to tell how happy she was, just for a while.
But she was asked not to,
You are a girl! Girls don't laugh and make merry like that!

She wanted to have fun,
Bask in the sun, to run and race.
Skip, hop, fight her bout, eagerly waiting for her turn.
But she was asked not to,
Dear who will marry you if you get two tones tanned doing all that?

She wanted her mind to speak,
Give words to her thoughts, her opinions,
Little did she know that the world would turn into a critique,
And tell to her dismay,
Your thoughts bring nothing but disgrace, who permitted you to think like that?

She wanted to know her fault,
Why her dreams were turned to mulch?
Why everything she said was considered absurd by default?
But she was asked not to fray,
To abide by customes, the social constructs, like a voiceless doormat.

She wanted to scream out loud,
But her voice was tamed, her armours destroyed.
She silently obliged, thinking she was doing her people proud.
But alas, she was starting to decay,
They said continue!!! else you will be the one upon whom people spat.

But SHE...

She wanted to live,
And know what it was like to be free.
Free from her fears and inhibitions I believe.
But she was daunted, Coz
The price of freedom was too high, she was already scrounging for pennies like a rat.

She wanted to breathe,
Break the shackles away,
Shed the cloak of fear and find some courage underneath,
But she couldn't...Defeated at last she knew...
Death was the only way to be free and there was no other way than that.

I vehemently deny that...

This poem is shout out to all the girls around me, who are constantly told by others what to do and what not to. Most of the times we let the society dictate us. But do that no more. The world is your canvas and maybe its time you started painting it with your dreams.

Wow.. So true. Every word speaks of the day to day instructions & advice we get from people around us on how to behave in public. Every action done unknowingly creates creepers of criticism by educated, elite & civilised class..!!
