Accelerate Action – It Starts at Home

Every year, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women and speak about empowering them to break barriers and shatter ceilings. We share quotes, attend events, and pledge to support women’s rights. But amidst all the noise, I find myself coming back to a simple, often overlooked truth—real change begins at home.

When we talk about empowering women, our minds often drift to corporate boardrooms, political spaces, or large-scale movements. But what about the women who form the backbone of our daily lives? The ones who quietly hold our homes together—our maids, cooks, nannies, and household staff. Their hands clean our homes, cook our meals, and care for our loved ones. They show up every day, despite the burdens they carry. They are the invisible force that allows so many of us to chase our dreams.

Yet, how often do we pause to ask—are we empowering them, or are we simply relying on them?

For many of us, their presence is woven into the rhythm of our daily lives. They care for our families while leaving their own behind. They rise before the sun, juggling their own struggles with a strength that often goes unnoticed. A simple "Thank you" or asking, "How is your family doing?" may seem small, but to them, it is a reminder that they matter. We need to start recognizing them as women worthy of dignity and respect and respect isn’t just in our words—it’s in our actions. Don’t call her “just the maid.” Use her name. Treat her with the same kindness and humanity you would want for yourself.

In this era of AI, most of them have limited access to even basic information. So what if we became a bridge to the knowledge they need? Is she aware of schemes for women’s welfare? Does she know how to access government healthcare? Could she benefit from learning basic financial literacy or digital skills? A small effort to guide her toward literacy, digital knowledge, or vocational training could change her life.

Often when it comes to us we talk about equality, fair treatment and opportunity at workplace. But do remember that her work isn’t "any less" because it happens within the walls of a home. Is she paid on time? Are her wages fair for the work she does? If you expect flexibility during your emergencies, do you extend the same grace when she needs it? A living wage isn’t charity—it’s a basic right. We cry when our bonuses take a dip, so why not give her fair bonuses during festivals?

But apart from all this, I would request you to listen to her story. Every woman has a story-one of resilience, sacrifice, and hope. Have you ever asked her about her childhood? About the dreams she once had? About the hardships she’s overcome? You might be surprised by how much you’ll learn—and how much it will humble you.

Remember that empowering women doesn’t always mean leading a movement—it means leading with kindness.
